Origin of state's name: Named after George Washington


The state flag and the state seal are similar. Passed in 1923, Washington state law describes the flag as having dark green bunting with a state seal in the center. It is the only state flag that is green. It is also the only state flag with a picture of a president.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Spain's Bruno Hezeta sailed the coast in 1775. American Captain Robet Gray sailed up the Columbia River in 1792. Canadian fur traders set up Spakane House in 1810. Americans under John Jacob Astor established a post at Fort Okanogan in 1811. Missionary Marcus Whitman settled near Walla Wallain 1836. Final agreement on the border of Washington and Canada was made with Britain in 1846. Gold was discovered in the state's northeast in 1855, bringing new settlers.
