Origin of state's name: Named for England's "Virgin Queen," Elizabeth I


A deep blue field contains the seal of Virginia with the Latin motto " Sic Semper Tyrannis" - "Thus Ever to Tyrants". Adopted in 1776. The two figures are acting out the meaning of the motto. Both are dressed as warriors. The woman, Virtue, represents Virginia. The man holding a scorge and chain shows that he is a tyrant. His fallen crown is nearby.

A LITTLE HISTORY

English settlers founded Jamestown in 1607. Virginians took over much of the government from royal Governor Dunmore in 1775, forcing him to flee. Virginians under George Rogers Clark freed the Ohio--Indiana-Illinois area of British forces. Benedict Arnold burned Richmond and Petersburg for the British in 1781. That same year, Britains' Cornwallis was trapped at Yorktown and surrendered.

Mr. Peanut was invented in 1916 by a Suffolk, Virginia, schoolchild who won $5 in a design contest sponsored by Planters Peanuts.
Virginia was the site of the surrenders ending the American Revolution (Yorktown) and the Civil War (Appomattox).
Virginia is called the Mother of Presidents because eight U.S. Presidents were born there.
Tobacco was once Virginia's sole economic crop.

Opened in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is 18 miles long and has two bridges and two mile-long tunnels. It extends over the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and connects the cities of Cape Charles and Norfolk.
Government employment, especially the Federal government and military, has replaced tobacco as the state's number one industry.
The Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, has twice as many bathrooms as is necessary. When it was built in the 1940's, the state of Virginia still had segregation laws requiring separate toilet facilities for blacks and whites.
