Origin of state's name: Named in honor of Admiral William Penn, father of the state's founder, William Penn


Pennsylvania's State Flag is composed of a blue field on which is embroidered the State Coat of Arms. The first State Flag bearing the State Coat of Arms was authorized by the General Assembly in 1799. An act of the General Assembly of June 13, 1907, standardized the flag and required that the blue field match the blue of Old Glory.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The first settlers were Swedish in 1643 on Tinicum Island. In 1655, the Dutch seized the settlement but lost it to the British in 1664. The region was given by Charles II to William Penn in 1681. Philadelphia (brotherly love) was the capital of the colonies during most of the American Revolution, and of the U.S. 1790-1800. Philadelphia was taken by the British in 1777; Washington's troops encamped at Valley Forge in the bitter winter of 1777-1778. The Declaration of Independence, 1776, and the Constitution, 1787, were signed In Philadelphia.
