A LITTLE HISTORY

French explorers visited the region in 1742. The U.S. acquired the area partly through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and partly through the explorations of Lewis and Clark in 1805-1806. Fur traders and missionaries established posts in the early 19th century. Indian uprisings reached their peak with the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Mining activity and the coming of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1883 brought population growth.
