The design on Michigan's deep blue field has three mottoes: On a red ribbon - "One Nation Made Up of Many States" On a blue shield - "I will Defend" On a white ribbon - "If You Seek a Pleasant Peninsula, Look Around" On the blue shield the sun rises over a lake and peninsula, a man with raised hand and holding a gun represents peace and the ability to defend his rights. The elk and moose are symbols of Michigan, while the eagle represents the United States.

A LITTLE HISTORY

French fur traders and missionaries visited the region in 1616; set up a mission at Sault Ste. Marie in 1641; and a settlement there in 1668. The whole region went to Britain in 1763. Anthony Wayne defeated their Indian allies at Fallen Timbers, Ohio in 1794. The British returned in 1812 and seized Ft. Mackinac and Detroit. Oliver H. Perry's Lake Erie victory and William H. Harrison's troops, who carried the war to the Thames River in Canada in 1813 freed Michigan once more.
