Origin of state's name: Based on the Iroquois Indian word "Ken-tah-ten," meaning "land of tomorrow"

A LITTLE HISTORY

Kentucky was the first area west of the Alleghenies settled by American pioneers. The first permanent settlement was Harrodsburg in 1774. Daniel Boone blazed the Wilderness Trail through the Cumberland Gap and founded Fort Boonesborough in 1775. Indian attacks, spurred by the British were unceasing, until, during the American Revolution General George Rogers Clark captured British forts in Indiana and Illinois in 1778. In 1792, after Virginia dropped its claims to the region, Kentucky became the 15th state.

FACTS AND TRIVIA ABOUT KENTUCKY

Mammouth Cave National Park is in Kentucky. Mammoth Cave is the world's longest cave and was first promoted in 1816. This makes it the second oldest tourist attraction in the U.S., preceded only by Niagara Falls.
The Kentucky Derby is the oldest continuously held horse race in the country. It is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville on the first Saturday in May.
The Bluegrass country around Lexington is the home of some of the world's finest race horses.
In 1774, Harrodstown (now Harrodsburg) was established as the first permanent settlement in the Kentucky region. It was named after James Harrod who led the team of surveyors.
Cheeseburgers were first served in 1934 at Kaelin's restaurant in Louisville.

All Chevrolet Corvettes are manufactured in Bowling Green.
The first commercial oil well was on the Cumberland River in McCreary County Kentucky in 1819.
