Sunflower State
Origin of state's name: From the Sioux Indian for "south wind people"

On a navy blue field is a sunflower, the state flower. Also, the state seal and the words "Kansas". In the picture of the state seal are thirty-four stars representing the order of statehood. Above the stars is the motto "To the Stars Through Difficulties". On the seal a sunrise overshadows a farmer plowing a field near his log cabin, a steamboat sailing the Kansas River, a wagontrain heading west and Native Americans hunting bison.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Coranado marched through the Kansas area in 1541; French explorers came next. The U.S. took over in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In the pre-war North-South struggle over slavery, so much violence swept the area that is was called Bleeding Kansas. Railroad construction after the war made Abilene and Dodge City terminals of large cattle drives from Texas.

Susanna Salter was elected mayor of Argonia in 1887, making her the first woman mayor in the U. S.
Helium was discovered by scientists at the University of Kansas in 1905.
