A LITTLE HISTORY

Fur traders were the first Europeans in Illinois, followed shortly, in 1673, by Jolliet and Marquette, and in 1680 by La Salle, who built a fort near present Peoria. First settlements were French, at Fort St. Louis on the Illinois River in 1692 and Kaskaskia in 1700. France ceded the area to Britain in 1763; American General George Rogers Clark, in 1778, took Kaskaskia from the British without a shot. Defeat of Indian tribes in the Black Hawk War (1832) and railroads in the 1850s inspired change.
