A LITTLE HISTORY

The first European to see Florida was Ponce de Leon in 1513. France established a colony, Fort Caroline, on the St. Johns River in 1564; Spain settled St. Augustine in 1565, and Spanish troops massacred most of the French. Britains's Francis Drake burned St. Augustine in 1586. Britain held the area briefly (1763-1783) and then returned it to Spain. After Andrew Jackson led a U.S. invasion in 1818, Spain ceded Florida to the U.S. in 1819. The Seminole War (1835-1842) resulted in removal of most Indians to Oklahoma. Florida seceded from the Union in 1861 and was readmitted in 1868.
